Disappointed, dumped, divorced. Everything Casey Slaughter counted on is gone. While contemporaries start their families, Casey works two jobs to haul herself out of debt. Friends and family recommend a new husband to solve all her problems, but Casey resists all well-intentioned advice. Although she longs for a soul mate, the last thing her flattened self-esteem needs is more rejection—and comparisons to her beautiful, talented older sister do nothing to enhance Casey’s confidence. Unable to have children, she feels she has nothing to offer in marriage. Will bitterness and insecurity destroy her, or can renewed faith in God provide some measure of comfort for this wounded heart? Can Casey ever find love again, or will a string of disasters keep her forever on the run?

I love this story and I wish it could have been a little bit longer. The title is very appropriate for the story; the only thing we can rely on is Jesus.
I love that the story was down to earth and real. Not your usual romance novel. Not an overly sweet fairy tale with a predictable outcome. The characters were well developed and real. Refreshing. I would love to see a sequel to the story.
This book is a really cute two hour read. The characters are new and the story original. Will go on to the next book by Charlene.
When Casey's husband divorces her for another woman, she thinks her life is over. While working two jobs, she is able to buy a house. Unable to have children, she believes that no one would ever be interested in her. When a new neighbor, Carlos moves next door, the two become friends. Carlos is definitely interested in Casey, but she doesn't see it. Carlos attends a party with Casey, but Casey dismisses her attraction to him. The two even attend the local church together, but Casey seems to think there is no chance of a relationship between her and Carlos. When a hurricane is headed toward their homes, the two escape together and realize that maybe, after all, they are meant to be together. Excellent read, enjoyable story.
This author writes entertaining books. I know anything I read from Ms. Havel will keep my interest, and this one certainly did. I laughed out loud in a few places and was kept in suspense in others. I loved the characters, and I identified with their struggle for survival as they faced unusual circumstances. Ms. Havel manages to craft and weave a story that will keep the reader interested from page one to page end. It's set in Texas, and since the author is a Texas resident, she knows the state well. Good book.
This book from Carlene Havel was lots of fun, yet thought-provoking and suspenseful at the same time. The primary characters (Casey and Carlos) are trying to find purpose and fulfillment in their lives. In particular, it was good to find the primary character, Casey, transformed from an inwardly-focused, insecure individual to an outwardly focused individual using her talents to bless others. The title, Here Today Gone Tomorrow is especially fitting--life and the temporal things we hold dear can change so quickly--a great reminder for us all.
This is a clean, Christian romance. The Christian thread is light to medium with attending church, quoting scripture and prayer. No preaching at the reader. The book had an odd feel to me. Each chapter break would skip forward in time then focus closely on a day or two, sometimes more. Snippets in time focusing on the mundane. You'd know what kind of soup she ate or what the gossip was at work but not know her thoughts and inner struggle. Then suddenly you find out two years have passed. The male protagonist is a shadow for two thirds of the story, showing up here or there for an interaction or emergency. Toward the last quarter of the book, when he does finally become an integral part of her life, the story gels and flows nicely. No more jumping through time or incidental side tracks. You do see her change from an angry, bitter divorcee to a happily engaged woman. You get to see what the protagonists are doing and saying through points in time but never really get to know the character's.
There were a few editing errors but not many. I put this book on the average level of three stars out of five.
I loved so many things about this book, but the thing I loved the most was the characters. The author filled her pages with people that I would like to have as friends. They had realistic personalities and struggles. I could clearly picture myself living next door to any of them. This story was gentle and beautiful, and woven throughout its pages was time-tested words of wisdom and evidence of God’s great love. The author’s conclusion that love is the only thing that lasts and that everything else is here today and gone tomorrow really made me think about my own life choices. And when the hurricane hit toward the end of the book, I was kept on the edge of my seat. I really liked this story, and it’s one that I’ll enjoy reading over and over. I recommend this book without hesitation. I thought it was wonderful!
